Approximately 400 people stopped in to admire and bid on Christmas trees, purchase gifts and visit Santa and Mrs. Claus during Saturday’s ChariTree Festival at the Chetco Grange Community Center.
The tree bids brought in $2,450 for nonprofits in Brookings-Harbor, according to Marilyn Hart, lead organizer. In addition, there was money garnered from the wreaths and other holiday goodies sold.
Visitors and judges chose their favorite trees.
Winning awards were:
•Elves Award — Southern Oregon Dress and Girl Around the World;
•Santa Award — Brookings-Harbor High School Leadership Class;
•Best in Show — Brookings-Harbor Community Helpers Emergency Food Bank;
•People’s Choice Award — Brookings-Harbor Garden Club.
Other nonprofits participating were the Azalea Quilters Guild, ChariTree, Chetco Activity Center, Chetco Grange, Coastline Neighbors, Janice Curtis Bird Sanctuary, Brookings-Harbor Lions Club, Oasis Shelter Home, Southern Oregon Kite Festival and Wally’s House.
“The committee really wishes to thank all of the people who helped make the event such a success — the nonprofit organizations, the volunteers and the community for their participation,” Hart said. “We especially thank the Chetco Grange for the use of their facility, Barron’s Home Furnishings for the use of their chairs, and we honor Red Bailey, who was leading the event until his untimely death last month.”
The committee also thanked Gold Beach Lumber for its help with the trees.
Plans are underway for next year’s event. Anyone wanting to help can contact Marilyn Hart at hart@uwosh.edu.
